Celle Castle, Celle, Germany
Celle is a town and capital of the district of Celle, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The town is situated in the southernmost part of the Lüneburg Heath on the banks of the river Aller, a tributary of the Weser.
The magnificent, whitewashed Celle Castle is the oldest building in the town. It overlooks the old town. Built in 1378 for the Dukes of Braunschweig-Luneburg, it was since re-built in Renaissance style in 1530. Georg Wilhelm, the last duke, altered the castle to its current appearance in the 18th century. He built palatial state rooms, and the castle theatre which is still popular today with the public. The castle also houses the only preserved renaissance place of worship north of the Alps in its chapel. Visitors can tour the many rooms of this recommended castle.
